I absolutely love my French bulldog Toby to bits. His squishy little face waits for me to return every day when I return home from work, he loves to keep me company as I'm cooking dinner in the kitchen and he loves to snuggle while we binge-watch the latest episodes of Ozark (OH MY GOD. How good is Ozark!!!). But aside from the unconditional love and affection, there are some cons to owning a French Bulldog.

Pros Of Owning A French Bulldog

1. French Bulldogs are extremely cute

Just look at them, with their big googly eats, large bat-ears, and squishy face. Who wouldn't fall in love with a Frenchie!

2. They are extremely affectionate and playful

Have you seen the youtube videos of French Bulldogs running and jump around with each other? 

Don't expect anything different. French Bulldogs are hilariously playful and affectionate with their owners.

3. Love hugs

French Bulldogs love to snuggle up to their owners. Often when we are sitting around watching TV, Toby will conveniently place himself in between my legs and rest his head.

4. Easy to groom

Due to their short coat, French Bulldogs are extremely easy to groom. They also do not require a trip to the hairdressers like other dog breeds.

5. Don't require much exercise

A daily 15-minute walk is enough to keep your French Bulldog fit, healthy and emotionally happy.

6. Small sized dog, perfect for apartment living

Due to their peaceful nature and small size, French Bulldogs make for an excellent apartment dog.

7. Don't bark much

Another great thing about French Bulldogs is that they do not bark often. This is another excellent reason why they make good apartment dogs.

 8. Friendly demeanor makes them great for young families with young kids

French Bulldogs are great with kids. They love to play and lick faces. Adding a French Bulldog to your family will mean your children will have a new best friend.

Cons Of Owning A French Bulldog

1. French Bulldogs are prone to health problems

French Bulldogs are prone to have a number of health issues. For example, it is common for them to suffer from a brachycephalic upper airway syndrome and laryngeal edema, both which make it harder for a French Bulldog to breathe, or Hip Dysplasia which is a condition that prevents a French Bulldog's hip from operating properly and may lead to visible ailments of pain and an inability to engage in daily activities such as running or even walking.

2. They don't too well in the heat

Due to their short snout and squishy face, French Bulldogs have difficulty breathing in hot weather. This can cause them to overheat quickly and will start to pant excessively when trying to cool down. It is best to avoid going for walks in the middle of the day when it is hottest. Mornings and evenings make for the best times to take your French Bulldog for a walk.

3. They are stubborn

French Bulldogs each have their own personality, but a common theme amongst the breed is that they tend to stubborn. Although this stubbornness doesn't mean it is impossible to train them, you may just have to have a little patience trying to get them to sit when you first start training.

4. They can be lead pullers

That is why is extremely important to wear a French Bulldog harness rather than a dog collar.

5. They snore at night time

French Bulldogs are loud snorers. Loud enough to keep the whole household awake at night. This is due to their short snouts and may also be due to brachycephalic upper airway syndrome, which constricts their airways making it more difficult to breathe. Make sure the room they sleep in is cool and well ventilated. Try to leave a window open at night.

6. Like to chew on things

Make sure to hide anything valuable that your French Bulldog may be able to get their mouths around. Toby's favorite is shoes and it's always my expensive ones. I guess you could say Toby has expensive taste *Ha Ha* (I'm actually crying on the inside).

6. They fart. No Joke, their farts are worse than rotten eggs.

This. Certain types of food make French Bulldogs gassy and you won't know they've farted until the wretched smell hits your nostrils.

Common French Bulldog misconceptions

1. French Bulldogs are aggressive

French Bulldogs may be highly energic, playful and sometimes a bit crazy, but they are definitely not aggressive. There is a lot of fake news on the internet that suggests French Bulldogs are an aggressive breed, but in all of my experience, I can tell you that, that is simply not true.

2. French Bulldogs don't shed 

French Bulldogs may have short hair, but this doesn't mean that they don't shed. You will still need to vacuum, especially in summer when they tend to malt more often.

3. French Bulldogs don't need to exercise

Like any other dog, French Bulldogs need regular exercise. A daily 15-minute walk to good to keep your French Bulldog healthy.
