How often should I cut my French Bulldog's nails?

Just like humans, French Bulldogs need to have their fingernails cut regularly. If you don’t cut your Frenchie’s nails, they may become very uncomfortable and have even been known to cause joint pain and bone issues. Longer nails can result in your French bulldog’s paws getting snagged, break and even become infected. Try and remember a time when you’ve accidentally banged your nail and it fell off or became infected. Painful huh? It’s the same thing for your pooch.

Okay, so it is important to cut my French Bulldog’s nails, but how often should I cut my French bulldog’s nails?

Well, it depends on a number of factors:

  • Activity – French Bulldogs that go for regular walks (in a French Bulldog harness) on concrete pavement will naturally wear down their nails and won’t need a manicure as often.
  • Age – Older Frenchies, that don’t go for walks as often, will need a more regular trimming.
  • Nail Length – If your French bulldog’s nails have managed to get quite long, you’ll want to cut his nails more often (cutting closer to the quick, shrinks the quick back)

On average, you should be cutting your French Bulldog’s nails once every 1-2 months. If you start to hear your dog’s nails tapping against the floor when they walk, it’s time for a manicure.

Common Problems When Cutting Your French Bulldog’s Nails

  • Dog Anxiety – it is sometimes difficult to keep your Frenchie calm and relaxed and it is not uncommon for them to try and struggle free of your grasp. If your dog is a squirmer, it might be best to leave the task to a professional dog groomer.
  • Bleeding – Your Frenchie has blood vessels that run through their nails. If you cut too far, you might accidentally cut into the quick (the pinkish area underneath their nail) and cause bleeding. This is painful for your dog but it is not the end of the world. Get a tissue and antiseptic and wash the blood away from your Frenchie’s nails.
  • Bad past experience – if you accidentally cut your Frenchie’s nails too far, this will lead to fear of future nail cutting sessions.

How To Have A Good Nail Cutting Experience With Your French Bulldog

  • Hold and handle your French Bulldog’s Paws at an early age – it is best to start early to get your Frenchie accustomed to having his paws held. When you play with him, gently massage his paws so that he gets used to your holding his paw.
  • Have a second pair of hands – having a second person hold your Frenchie, while you cut their nails is the easiest way to do it. When someone else is holding him, they are able to keep him from squirming as much, whilst you have two steady hands at your disposal, meaning fewer accidents.
  • Visit a Vet Or Professional Dog Groomer – the next time you take your French Bulldog to the vet, ask them to show you how to cut your French bulldog’s nails. They will be able to quickly show you in person the best way to cut their nails without causing harm or distress.
