How To Clean French Bulldog Ears

With their big bat ears, squishy little face and adorable wrinkles, cleaning your furbaby require a bit more attention than just their bi-monthly bubble baths!

So let's talk about ear hygiene.

Toby's ears are definitely great big dust catchers that require cleaning on a weekly basis. French Bulldog can have ear problems such as a build-up of bacteria, yeast, etc. When I bathe Toby I take extreme care not to get the water and shampoo down his ear canal as wet ears can be a good breeding ground for bacteria causing infection. If your

If you find any dirt or wax looking grime in their ears it should be cleaned to reduce the likelihood of your Frenchie developing an ear/yeast infection. Your vet and/or breeder will have a good ear cleansing solution (I use Opti-Otic skin and ear cleanser) that will dissolve the dirt and wax deep inside the ear.

To clean your Frenchie's ears follow the below steps:

  1. Start by squirting the cleansing solution into the ear (I quickly squeeze the bottle for just a second) then massage the cartilage in the front of the ear for around 1 minute.

Massaging the solution will help it penetrate deeper into the ear canal and dislodge the debris. If you're massaging the ear correctly you will hear a squelching sound.

  2. After the massage, allow your Frenchie to shake the solution with the dissolved debris out of the ear until he or she is satisfied.

  3.  Dry the ear canal with a dry soft cloth until it is dry.

I never use a cotton bud with Toby as I'm too afraid that it can compact wax down into the ear and damage the lining. I normally clean Toby's ears once a week, however,  it's always important to examine your Frenchie's ears if you find them constantly shaking their head and/or scratching their ear, this may be a symptom of an ear infection.

A great product for French Bulldogs that I recommend is Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner.

  • Epi-Otic may be used for routine ear cleansing in healthy ear canal or prior to administration of other ear preparations
  • A mild alcohol-free cleansing and drying solution for routine maintenance of otitis externa
  • Epi-Otic has a neutral pH and contains no chlorhexidine or alcohol

Grab Your Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner Now!

Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner worked like a charm. In less than three days my dog's yeast build-up and other yucky stuff were gone. The salicylic acid helps to dry the ear canals. Just lay your dog on a flat surface, pull up on outer ear to open up the ear canal, squirt a small amount of VirBac in there, rub it so the medicine gets down in there. Swab it out with paper towels, and finish with Q-tips. No, you will not hurt your French Bulldog, but you will clean out the gunk

Hi. I just got a 2 months old frenchie. I was wondering when should I start cleaning her ears because they’re already dirty. Thank you in advance.
